Just How Big is the Internet in China?

In the past two tech posts, I covered how big the Internet was around the globe and some of the cool thing we could do on the Internet. To day, I just wanted to show how big the Internet is in China.

So, just how big is the Internet in China? The simple answer to this question is – It is soooooooo HUGE.

Here are some of the break downs …

Some Highlights:

As of June 30, 2009, there were more than 338,000,000 Internet users in China. Out of these numbers:

  • 162,000,000 were bloggers
  • 117,000,000 were mobile users
  • 84,500,000 were rural users
  • 52.5% were male and 47.5% were female
  • 90.6% use broadband connections
  • The average Chinese user spends nearly 17 hours a week on the Internet

The penetration rate stands at about 25%, meaning 75% of the Chinese population are not using the Internet yet. This brings even more opportunity for Internet related ventures in China.

In June 2009, there were nearly 2.9 million websites in China, showing a 90% increase over the number of websites in 2007.

The top 6 applications the Chinese users like are:

  • Music: 85%
  • News: 78%
  • IM: 75%
  • Shopping: 25%
  • Stock Trading: 12%
  • Travel: 6%

The top 10 Chinese websites include:

  1. www.baidu.com
  2. www.qq.com
  3. www.google.cn
  4. www.sina.com.cn
  5. www.taobao.com
  6. www.163.com
  7. www.google.com
  8. www.youku.com
  9. www.tudou.com
  10. www.sohu.com

When you look at the demographics, most people above the age of 50 don’t use the Internet that much. This is very consistent with other countries. Here is the breakdown:

Group Users’ Age Percentage, %
01 <10 0.4
02 11-19 35.2
03 20-29 31.5
04 30-39 17.6
05 40-49 9.6
06 50-59 4.2
07 60-69 1.5

Below is a great graphical illustration that explains how huge the Internet market is in China:
